“But WHY do you love me?” I asked my husband of 27+ years this question for the thousandth time.
“Because I do!” His same lame answer frustrated me to no end!!!
My husband tells me he loves me repeatedly. And while I take great delight in this, from time to time I just absolutely cannot understand why, after all we’ve been through, with all my faults and failures, that this man would love me as much as he does.
One day during my Bible reading, I was thinking about how “…God so loved the world, that he gave his only begotten Son, that whosoever believeth in him should not perish, but have everlasting life.” (John 3:16)
God so loved…
It’s hard to believe God so loved me that He would send His Son to die for me; especially when I fail Him every day.
God tells us in the Bible that He loves everyone, but surely that means that He loves those perfect people out there doing great things for God that are always, well, perfect.
Surely not someone like me, an imperfect girl who struggles to live out her faith and show the love of Jesus!
I don’t always get things right no matter how hard I try. I don’t always act right, I don’t always do right. I don’t always say the right things or treat people the way I should. I want to! I try to! I pray and ask God to help me…and sometimes I fail.
But God….
The Apostle Paul knew a thing or two about feeling this way.
“For I do not do the good I want, but the evil I do not want is what I keep on doing. Now if I do what I do not want, it is no longer I who do it, but sin that dwells within me.” (Romans 7:19-20)
Paul got it! Paul knew and Paul struggled too!
He was loved by God, transformed by Jesus, changed from a severe persecutor of the Church to establishing Churches while preaching the Gospel of Jesus Christ without a care for his own life….and sometimes, even Paul struggled!
Did the struggle change God’s mind about His love for Paul?
ABSOLUTELY NOT!
This is GRACE!
This is LOVE!
God knows us, and yet He loves us. He knows we sometimes struggle. He knows we are going to fail. He knows this and He gives us His grace to get back up when we get knocked down. Grace when we don’t act right. Grace when we don’t do right, speak right, treat people right, and on and on!
He paid the ultimate price when HE sent HIS Son, Jesus, to die for us. Ridiculed, beaten, flesh ripped from His body, His blood literally poured out for us.
The highest price required…the highest price paid.
HIS SON, JESUS…for us.
This is Grace!
This is Love!
God bought us with a high price…and since He bought us with Jesus’ own blood…don’t you dare think for one minute that He doesn’t love you…THE REAL YOU…the one that sometimes struggles…the you covered by the blood of Jesus!
God doesn’t love us because of anything that we do or anything that we are…He loves us because He CHOOSES to love us and in His love He sent Jesus to die for us …unconditionally, regardless of, well, us!
The same goes for my husband’s “because I do.”
My husband has experienced the worst of me, and loves me still. He loves me unconditionally because He chooses to love me, regardless of, well, me. It has nothing to do with what I do for him, as much as it has to do with his commitment to me and our marriage.
This is Grace!
This is Love!
If I could get you to understand one thing, it would be how much God loves you.
God knew that sin would separate us from Him, and in grace and love, He made a way for us to come back home to Him.
“God shows his love for us in that while we were still sinners, Christ died for us.” (Romans 5:8)
You could never do a thing to make Him love you more and you can never disappointment Him so much to make Him love you less.
HIS LOVE is perfect and He loves YOU with that perfect love.
“The Lord your God is in your midst, a mighty one who will save; He will rejoice over you with gladness; He will quiet you by his love; He will exult over you with loud singing.” (Zephaniah 3:17)
This is Grace!
This is Love!
